Instagram experiments

Instagram seems to be a dirty word at the moment, so I apologise to everyone who's currently in uproar.

Anyway, I've been having fun shooting stuff from my computer monitor with Instagram. It picks up these weird pixel lines that make the images almost halftone like. The iPhone 5 camera is also so awesome it picks up all the dust and stuff that's on the monitor giving it a really cool filmic look. As if Instagram wasn't retro enough! Anyway, I'm having fun messing about. Might try some moving image like this too.

Kyle Bean/Red Design Collaboration

Last month, Red worked with one of my favourite illustrators, Kyle Bean, to create an autumn inspired 'Party Season' window display for Union jewellery store (on Union Street!) in Brighton's South Laines.

Many other windows around this time of year tend to use reds, browns, oranges and yellows, colours that are typical to this time of year. However, we wanted to do something different, something that was associated with autumn in some way but focused more on the celebratory nature of this time of year.

After quite a few ideas, we went with the idea of bright coloured leaves blowing in the wind that would come together to form a party dress. With that idea, we approached Kyle (who was perfect for this) and with some more of his input and expertise we had a really strong idea and great looking final piece!

Thanks a lot to Kyle for his hard work, it was great to work with him and hopefully I can again soon (maybe something animated??? would love that)! Also thanks to our intern, Chandni Patel, for her hard work and help with putting this together!

Art direction by myself (as Red) and Kyle Bean.

Also, the project got on the Creative Review blog, so check that out too.

I will finish this soon!

Xmas Parties At Battersea Arts Centre

We've put up a new project page on the Red website featuring some work we did for the Battersea Arts Centre. They needed to promote one of their venues as the place to be this Xmas for your company parties. The rooms are stylistically quite rustic, with wooden floors and wooden panels and features throughout them so we designed some DL size flyers using letterpress.

We designed the front and back and enlisted the help of Stanley James Press to print the flyers and set the type for the front. For the back, SJP got a custom plastic plate made for us so we could retain the textured letterpress quality but add in custom features such as the map and the BAC logo. The results are amazing, so thanks to them for their hard work! Oh and they made a great video documenting the process so check that out as well!

Commando

Really gutted this isn't being used as it was my favourite type treatment for a job I'm doing. It's really simple but it's for a product that's aimed at kids from 0 - 3 years. I thought that using a rounded font and customising it to become a stencil would be a really nice idea to get across the army theme but in a child like way.

Letterpress

We commissioned some letterpress recently for an Xmas party invite for the BAC. It's still in production at the moment and I'll share the final outcome as soon as it's done. In the meantime I thought I'd share a quick teaser for you to have a look at.

Tony Scott

It was with much sadness to hear of the news today, that Tony Scott committed suicide. I can't even imagination what may have led him to consider that this the best way out or even what he'd been going through (I've just learnt of reports that he had inoperable brain cancer). All I can say is, that I'm massively gutted and I'm going to miss him as a filmmaker. Just take a look at the video below, and for god's sake watch his films to see why! Some of the films he made were amongst some of the best films I've ever seen. True Romance made such an impact on me and I'll never forget the first time I saw it with my brother Jack. RIP Tony.

Paranorman

I don't often share other people's work or inspiration on my blog but for this I make an exception!

These behind the scenes clips are so good, I thought I'd share. Love seeing animators in action. The sets are characters are beautifully crafted too. Very inspiring.

Union Window Display

Featuring many of the props we made and used in the shoot. Was really great to recreate some scenes from shoot and let the props be seen in the flesh. Really proud of the wreath and the log, both featuring the Union logo - all about the details!

unused logo development

One from a logo route we were developing slightly. After many different variations we decided to let it go as another route was preferred.

Union Love Tale

If you've been following my Twitter you'll have seen me tweeting about the #UnionLoveTale campaign. Today we finally put the project on the Red website, coinciding with the release of the promo video that Brighton production company/digital agency Stupid made for us.

#UnionLoveTale from Red Design on Vimeo.

I'm really proud of the whole project as it's the first photo shoot and campaign I've art directed for a client. I also got the chance to work with my good friend, photographer Kat Mitchell. She did a really great job and I really hope we get to do something like this again soon!

Big Things

Inspired by Prometheus. That film looked so god damn gorgeous and I liked it's ideas too. I want to have a proper go at developing a personal project around it but here's the first thing I was playing around with.

Of Empires Studio Promos

A couple of weeks ago I went along to Outhouse Studios in Reading to document my bro's band 'Of Empires' recording sessions.

I had fun doing some time lapse stuff and shooting a bit of video which I don't get to do that often so it was nice to do something a bit different. Got caught some more video stuff in the pipeline for them too which I'm really excited about!

Check out episode 1 below, I'll be updating this post weekly with the others as they're released. Cheers!

Union shoot behind the scenes

On Friday 11th May we finally did our shoot for Union (http://www.unionjewellery.com/)! After weeks of preparation (and weeks of checking the weather) we pulled the trigger and went for it. Turns out we got the weather just right and things seemed to run quite smoothly on the day.

I'd like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work. It was my first time art directing a shoot of this magnitude and it was made much easier by such a great crew, so thanks!

I'll have some proper images to show you soon but you'll have to settle for these behind the scenes shots for now! Cheers!
